In the late 90s, VerticalXchange founder and CEO Greg Geisler noticed something: trade shows were fading.
During the last years of his 19-year tenure as the president of Champion Productions, creator of the Strictly Business Expo computer trade shows, Geisler was watching attendance dwindle, specifically at the top end of the marketplace- the senior most executives representing the largest firms stopped attending. The market was changing, and Geisler knew a new solution was required. The longtime trade show veteran sold Champion Productions and went to back to the drawing board.
Geisler first sought the input of 50 chief information officers at mid-sized and larger companies who told him that they had specific needs that trade show vendors simply weren’t meeting. Also, the staff representing trade show vendors was rarely senior management, which added several unnecessary steps to the sales process before real action could be taken. Senior level decision makers were busier than ever with smaller support staffs; they didn’t have time to waste on a shotgun problem-solving approach. They wanted a laser-focused search, coupled with private meetings with senior management, but at the time, that simply didn’t exist.
